先日、語学留学で北海道に滞在中の海外の皆さまをお迎えし、染物体験を行いました。
体験では「ふろしき（小サイズハンカチ）」と「手ぬぐい」のどちらかを選んでいただくのですが、どちらも初めて耳にする日本語とのことで、その用途をご説明すると、
「なるほど！」と驚きの反応がたくさん返ってきました。
私たち日本人にとっては当たり前の「ふろしき」や「手ぬぐい」。
ふろしきはお弁当を包んだり、ちょっとした贈り物を包むのにも便利で、手ぬぐいもハンカチやタオル代わり、インテリアなど様々に使えることを知っていただくことで、日本の文化に自然と触れていただける時間となりました。
自分自身の手で染め上げたオリジナルの一枚を、帰国後も日常の中で使っていただけたら嬉しいです。

A Cultural Dyeing Experience with Language Students Visiting Hokkaido
We recently hosted a dyeing workshop for international language students currently studying in Hokkaido.
Participants were invited to choose between dyeing a furoshiki (wrapping cloth) or a tenugui (Japanese hand towel).
Since these words were new to most of the guests, we explained their meanings and everyday uses—like using a furoshiki to wrap lunch boxes or gifts. As we talked about each item, there were many surprised and impressed reactions:
“Oh, that makes so much sense!”
For Japanese people, these items are familiar, everyday tools. But for our guests, learning about their practical and cultural significance became a memorable introduction to Japanese traditions.
We hope that the beautiful pieces they created by hand will continue to be used and appreciated back home—serving not only as functional items but also as reminders of their time in Japan.
