カナダからのお客様と染物体験 ～手ぬぐいの魅力を知るひととき～
アメリカから北海道へ旅行に訪れたお客様が、珈琲染めの染物体験にお越しくださいました。
今回のお客様は、北海道を訪れるにあたり、札幌ならではの体験ができる場所を探していたそうです。
ご自身でChatGPTに「札幌ならではの体験ができる場所」を調べ、その後、宿泊されていたホテルのコンシェルジュの方に相談されたとのことでした。
ChatGPTから野口染舗の染物体験を紹介されたことを知り、私たちのもとへお越しくださいました。
そのお話を伺ったとき、正直、とても驚きました。
これまで、染物体験については、日々SNSやWEBで発信を続けてきました。
その発信が海を越え、北海道を訪れたお客様と私たちをつないでくれたのです。
「日々発信してきたことが、ここまで来たか」
そんな嬉しい驚きとともに、これまで積み重ねてきた発信の意味を、改めて感じる出来事でした。
北海道には、観光地を訪れたり、美味しいものを食べたりするだけではなく、その土地の素材や文化に触れられる体験がたくさんあります。
その中から私たちの染物体験を選んでいただけたことを、とても嬉しく思います。
今回は「珈琲染め」に挑戦
今回体験していただいたのは、BetulaNで行っている「珈琲染め」です。
珈琲を楽しんだ後に残る素材を染料として活用し、ストールを染めていきます。
珈琲染めの面白さは、同じ染料を使っていても、染め方や生地の状態によって、一枚一枚表情が変わることです。
お二人にも、それぞれご自身でストールを染めていただきました。
染めている時間も、ただ色を付けるだけではありません。
どんな色になるのか、どんな模様が生まれるのか。
布を広げる瞬間まで分からない、天然染めならではの楽しさがあります。
そして完成したストールを手に、お二人ともとても嬉しそうな表情を見せてくださいました。
「札幌でしかできない体験」を目指して
私たちが染物体験を続けている理由のひとつは、北海道や日本のものづくりに触れるきっかけをつくりたいからです。
観光で訪れた場所で、自分の手を動かして何かをつくる。
そして、その日に染めたものを旅の思い出として持ち帰る。
そんな時間も、旅の大切な思い出のひとつになるのではないかと思っています。
今回のように、海外から北海道へ来られた方が、ご自身でChatGPTを使って札幌の体験を調べ、ホテルのコンシェルジュの方に相談したことをきっかけに、私たちの染物体験を見つけてくださったこと。
それは、これからの時代ならではの出会いだと感じました。

そんな方に、染物という日本のものづくりを知っていただく。
そして、北海道の素材や、役目を終えた素材に新たな価値を見つける。

A Coffee-Dyeing Experience in Sapporo That Connected Us Across the Ocean
We recently had the pleasure of welcoming two guests from the United States to our dyeing workshop in Sapporo, where they experienced coffee dyeing.
While visiting Hokkaido, they were looking for a unique experience that they could enjoy in Sapporo—something that would allow them to experience a little of the local culture and craftsmanship.
They first used ChatGPT to search for unique experiences in Sapporo, and then also asked the concierge at the hotel where they were staying for recommendations.
That was how they discovered our dyeing experience at Noguchi Senpo, which had been recommended to them through ChatGPT.
When they told us this story, we were honestly surprised.
We have continued to share our dyeing experiences and BetulaN’s activities through social media and our website, day after day.
To learn that those daily efforts had reached across the ocean and connected us with visitors from the United States was a very special moment.
“So this is how far our daily sharing has come.”
It was a wonderful surprise, and it made us realize once again how meaningful it is to keep sharing what we do.
Hokkaido offers many ways to experience the region beyond visiting famous sights or enjoying its food. There are also opportunities to connect with local materials, culture, and craftsmanship.
We are truly happy that, among all those choices, they decided to spend part of their journey with us.
A Coffee-Dyeing Experience
For this visit, they chose coffee dyeing, one of the experiences offered by BetulaN.
We use materials left after enjoying coffee as a source for the dye, giving them another purpose through the dyeing process.
One of the fascinating things about coffee dyeing is that even when using the same dye, each piece develops its own character depending on the way it is dyed and the condition of the fabric.
The two guests each dyed their own stole by hand.
The experience is about more than simply adding color to fabric.
What color will emerge? What kind of pattern will appear?
There is a special sense of anticipation in natural dyeing because you do not know exactly what the final piece will look like until you unfold it.
When they held up their finished stoles, both guests had wonderful smiles on their faces.
Creating Experiences Unique to Sapporo
One of the reasons we continue offering dyeing experiences is because we want to create opportunities for people to encounter Japanese craftsmanship and the materials of Hokkaido through their own hands.
Making something yourself while traveling, and then taking it home as a memory of your journey, can become a special part of the travel experience.
This visit was particularly meaningful to us because guests from overseas found our workshop after searching for a Sapporo experience with ChatGPT and consulting their hotel concierge.
It felt like a very modern kind of encounter—one that would have been difficult to imagine just a few years ago.
For those who want to experience something special in Sapporo, we hope our dyeing workshops can offer a chance to discover Japanese craftsmanship in a personal and memorable way.
