言葉だけではなく、手仕事を通して日本を感じる時間。
日本語を学ばれている皆様に、染物体験へご参加いただきました。
今回制作したのはハンカチとしても使えるサイズですが、実際には小さなふろしきとしても活用できる大きさの作品です。
体験の前には、ふろしきの歴史や使い方についてもご紹介しました。海外ではまだあまり知られていないふろしきですが、一枚の布で物を包んだり、バッグとして活用したりできる日本ならではの知恵に、皆様興味深く耳を傾けてくださいました。
日本語の学習だけでなく、日本の文化や暮らしに触れる機会としても、ふろしきの話はとても良い学びの時間になったように感じます。
染色では、一人ひとりが思い思いの色や模様を選び、世界に一枚だけの作品を制作。完成した作品を広げると、それぞれ異なる表情が現れ、皆様の個性があふれる素敵な作品が並びました。
同じ技法で染めても、一つとして同じものはありません。
日本での学びや思い出とともに、これからも日常の中で使っていただけたら嬉しく思います。

Each handmade furoshiki carries not only beautiful patterns, but also memories of time spent in Japan.
Learning Japanese Culture Through Dyeing
We were delighted to welcome a group of Japanese language students for a traditional dyeing workshop.
During this experience, participants created hand-dyed cloths that can be used as handkerchiefs or as small furoshiki, a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth.
Before the dyeing began, we introduced the history and many practical uses of furoshiki. For many participants, it was their first time learning about this unique aspect of Japanese culture. They were fascinated to discover how a simple piece of cloth can be used to wrap gifts, carry everyday items, and reduce waste through reusable packaging.
The workshop provided an opportunity not only to practice and learn Japanese but also to experience Japanese culture through hands-on creativity.
Using traditional shibori dyeing techniques, each participant folded, tied, and dyed their fabric to create a unique design. When the finished pieces were unfolded, beautiful patterns emerged, and every work reflected the personality and creativity of its maker.
Although everyone used the same technique, no two pieces were alike.
We hope these handmade furoshiki will serve as both useful everyday items and lasting reminders of their time in Japan. Thank you all for joining us and for sharing such a wonderful experience.
