世界に一枚だけの作品づくり。
海外から日本へ留学され、日本語を学んでいる皆さんに染物体験へお越しいただきました。
皆さん日本が大好きで、日本の文化や暮らしに興味を持ってくださっていることが、会話の中からも伝わってきます。
今回の体験では、ただ染めるだけではなく、事前に手拭いや風呂敷の使い方や、日本の暮らしの中でどのように親しまれてきたかについて説明を受けてから参加してくださいました。
日本では昔から暮らしの中で使われてきた手拭いや風呂敷。
一枚の布にはさまざまな役割があります。
体験当日は北海道とは思えないほど気温が高く、工房の中も蒸し暑い一日でした。私が暑さ対策で鉢巻きをしていると、「かっこいい！」という声が上がり、体験が終わる頃には、何人もの皆さんが完成した手拭いを鉢巻きとして頭に巻いて楽しんでいました。
手拭いが日本の暮らしの道具として自然に受け入れられ、その場で実際に使ってもらえたことは、とても印象に残る出来事でした。
工房では染色の工程や職人の仕事についてもご紹介し、日本のものづくりに触れていただく時間となりました。
それぞれの作品には、その人らしい色や模様が表れ、世界に一枚だけの素敵な手拭いが完成しました。
日本文化やものづくりを通して生まれた素敵な出会いに感謝しています。
また皆さんにお会いできる日を楽しみにしています。
完成した作品が広げられるたびに歓声が上がり、皆さんで作品を見せ合いながら大変盛り上がりました。特に、青と赤を組み合わせた花のような模様の作品は、「とても美しい！」と皆さんから注目を集めていました。
日本文化に触れながら、皆さんらしい素敵な手拭い・ミニ風呂敷（ハンカチ）が完成しました。
Learning Japanese Culture Through Dyeing
We recently welcomed a group of international students studying Japanese to our dyeing workshop.
It was a pleasure to meet people who not only love Japan but are also eager to learn its language, culture, and traditions. Their curiosity and enthusiasm made the experience even more meaningful for us.
Before the workshop, the students learned about the many ways tenugui (traditional Japanese hand towels) and furoshiki(traditional wrapping cloths) are used in everyday life and how they are part of Japanese culture. This gave them a deeper appreciation before creating their own pieces.
Inside our workshop, we also introduced the dyeing process and shared how traditional craftsmanship has been passed down through generations in Japan.
On the day of the workshop, it was unusually hot for Hokkaido, and the studio became quite warm. I was wearing a tenugui as a hachimaki (traditional Japanese headband) to stay cool. Several students told me it looked “cool,” and after finishing their dyeing, many of them immediately tied their own tenugui around their heads the same way.
It was a wonderful moment to see a traditional Japanese item become something they naturally wanted to use and enjoy.
Each piece reflected its creator’s personality through unique colors and patterns, resulting in one-of-a-kind works of art.
