「板締め絞りと亀甲柄で楽しむ日本文化」
今回は、海外からお越しのお客様に、ふろしきの染物体験を楽しんでいただきました。
ふろしきは、一枚の布でさまざまなものを包み、持ち運ぶことができる、日本ならではの文化のひとつです。
最近では、海外でも「Furoshiki」という言葉を知っている方が増えてきましたが、実際に使い方やその背景にある日本の文化をお伝えすると、皆さんとても興味深そうに耳を傾けてくださいます。
今回の体験では、布を折り、板で挟んで染める板締め絞りに挑戦していただきました。
そして、染め上がったふろしきに現れた六角形の美しい模様。
この模様は、亀の甲羅を表した「亀甲（きっこう）柄」です。
亀は昔から長寿の象徴とされており、亀甲柄には「長寿」や「健康」、「幸せが長く続きますように」という願いが込められています。
ただ布を染めるだけではなく、「この模様にはこんな意味があるんですよ」と日本の文化や想いを知っていただくことで、染物体験がより深い日本文化の体験になります。
完成したふろしきを手にした皆さんの笑顔がとても印象的でした。
自分で染めたふろしきは、世界にひとつだけの作品。
旅の中で実際に日本の文化に触れ、自分の手で作品を作る時間は、きっと日本で過ごした大切な思い出のひとつになってくれることと思います。
私たちも、こうして海外からのお客様に日本の染物やふろしき文化を知っていただけることを、とても嬉しく思っています。

Discovering Japanese Culture Through Furoshiki Dyeing
We were delighted to welcome guests from overseas for a special Japanese dyeing experience.
This time, the participants dyed their own furoshiki, a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth. More and more international visitors are becoming familiar with furoshiki, but many are still surprised to learn that it is much more than simply a piece of fabric.
Furoshiki represents a unique part of Japanese culture—the art of wrapping and carrying things beautifully with a single piece of cloth. During the experience, we enjoyed seeing the participants discover the many possibilities of furoshiki and its practical, beautiful way of life.
Creating a Traditional Kikko Pattern
The participants also experienced itajime shibori, a traditional Japanese resist-dyeing technique using folded fabric and boards.
The beautiful hexagonal pattern created through this technique is called Kikko (亀甲), or the tortoiseshell pattern.
In Japanese culture, the Kikko pattern is associated with the shell of a tortoise, which has traditionally been considered a symbol of longevity, good fortune, and lasting prosperity.
Learning the meaning behind the pattern made the experience even more special. The participants were not only creating beautiful dyed fabrics—they were also discovering the stories, traditions, and wishes woven into Japanese culture.
We hope that their handmade furoshiki will become a lasting memory of their time in Japan.
